Obtained schooling in music at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Music in Prague, from where he graduated in 1990. His artistic development benefited by personal consultations with cellists Maurice Gendron, Daniil Shafran and Aurora Ginastera. While still a student, he appeared as a soloist in concert productions featuring concertos by Tartini, Haydn, Saint-Saëns and Dvořák.

Karel Fiala is laureate of the Giovanni Battista Viotti and Vincenzo Bellini International Competitions in Italy, and winner of the International Young Artists Platform Award. He has performed in the majority of European countries, as well as in Asia and South Africa. His CD recordings (Digital Media-GZ) contain cello concertos by Czech composers of the Classical era (Rejcha, Vranický, Fiala), whose music he has championed.

His solo repertoire comprises the complete works of J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, virtually the complete Romantic sonata literature, and from the treasury of 20th-century music most notably works of Martinů, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Kodaly and others. His favourites include the Dvořák B minor Concerto, Brahms´ Double Concerto, and Ernest Bloch´s Méditation hébraique.
He has to his credit a record of concert appearances with the Slovak, Moravian, Northern Bohemian and Plzeň Philharmonic Orchestras, the National Orchestra of Castile, and the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra. Apart from that, he has worked with a long list of chamber orchestras (Suk Chamber Orchestra, Virtuosi Pragensis, Archi Boemi, and others).
Karel Fiala is a founding member of the Kubelík Trio (1992).

He has devoted part of his time to teaching in various seasonal courses, a domain where he has followed the line charted by the Russian and French cello schools. He currently performs on instruments built in the workshop of Nicola Amati (1681) and Vincenzo Panormo (1809).
